Hearing loss affects the brain, tinnitus and social connections

Hearing loss affects the brain, tinnitus and social connections

Dear Practice Member,

I am studying the outer and middle ear with a renown researcher. I am not getting into the study of how to fit patients for hearing aids. The front of this books cover mentions that but the layer of keratin over the skin cells of the ear is revealing different conditions as well as the appearance of the Tympanic Membrane and that is what I am studying.

I have had two instances where patients of mine got very upset

that I suggested they get a hearing test with an audiologist to possibly be fitted for hearing aids. It has been found to prevent early onset dementia in studies and also helps tinnitus allot by giving the ear the signal it is missing. These people actually left my practice over it and I can only think that it triggered their fear of mortality and it is something they aren’t ready to face.

To quote from Dr Stanley Max Chartrands book: Throughout the literature, one finds almost unanimous consensus over the major psychological and psychosocial deterrents for hearing impaired consumers’ failure to seek help for their hearing and communication breakdowns.

Consensus includes such behaviors as lack of awareness, denial, vanity, social stigma and skewed cost/benefit perceptions.

Ramsdell in 1978 suggested that the most significant problems presented by unmitigated hearing loss were psychological including  depression, anxiety and defensiveness, distrust and social paranoia.

Given all that, it is very important to see if a patient in my office can hear me and also to look in their ears and recommend this if I deem it necessary. As a former nurse and a doctor I am uniquely qualified to make this upsetting recommendation and also due to my year long association with Dr Max Stanley Chartrand.

I have been studying with Dr. Max Chartrand who is the world’s most authority on a condition of the ears called Septic Keratosis Obturans. He has done allot of research on this topic and is also able to diagnose many conditions by looking in the ears, known as an Otoscope exam. He uses video Otoscopy so he can share what he is seeing with his patients.

Keratosis obturans is a not so rare ear condition where dead skin cells (keratin) build up into a hard plug inside the ear canal instead of moving outward. The term “septic” refers to a theoretical perspective in some literature suggesting these plugs trap bacteria and debris, potentially interacting with systemic or local infections, though standard medicine treats it primarily as a local obstructive and inflammatory process. If it is there for a long time or becomes black it can be deadly. It is often overlooked.

His book on Video Otoscopy is enlightening as he shows many pictures of the inner ears, what shape the Keratin is in and what it indicates. In some, if the Keratin is peeled back, it shows it has been damaged by the use of Q-tips or sticking other things in the ears. In others peeled back Keratin can indicate Diabetes Mellitus. The hydration of a person can be seen in the ear as well as collagen stores. Also lipid levels can be shown and then recommendations made from there.

In short, I will continue my studies with Dr. Chartrand in November and be more involved in his clinic this fall.

If you have tinnitus or wish to have a good ear exam please consider seeing your nearest Audiologist for a hearing test. Not a screening which is not precise enough.

And please consider seeing Dr. Chartrand ,PHD.in Casa Grande Arizona for a 2 hour Bio Marker Assessment. It can be life saving and very enlightening. I understand at this time there is no fee for this service.
